Patrick Leong, singer, songwriter, producer and co-founder of Oops! Asia, a local Christian recording label, is one of Malaysia’s most successful gospel singers, with three albums under his belt and a fourth one on the way. The multi-faceted Leong is also a consummate tennis player, professional tennis coach and gifted graphic artist.
As he looks back on his illustrious and enviable career, Leong shares with Asian Beacon how God called him out of darkness and led him step by step to inspire and impact the country, region and beyond through music.
‘ME SING?’
Growing up, however, Leong, 37, didn’t realise he could sing. “I never thought I had a good voice because I didn’t know how to evaluate myself,” says Leong, who has no formal training. “When I was a college student, my elder brother heard me playing the piano and singing. He turned to me and said, ‘You actually can sing,’ which is a rare comment from him.”
Born in Johor Bahru in 1973, Leong and his family moved around the country and eventually ended up in Sitiawan, a small village in Perak. Leong recalls a simple childhood, cycling for miles and playing tennis.
“Tennis helped develop my character and build up my sense of focus,” says Leong, who picked up the sport at the age of five from his father. “I became a very driven person and excelled in it.”
Leong also sat for his Grade 8 piano examination during his SPM year, and soon after studied graphic design at the Malaysian Institute of Art in Kuala Lumpur (MIA). Later, he worked for an architectural publication company and then as a graphic designer at Malaysia Airlines in 1996.
It was then that he was introduced to singer Juwita Suwito by a mutual friend to be a back-up vocalist at a performance. From there, he began singing back-up for other top Malaysian singers, such as Siti Nurhaliza, Sheila Majid, Dayang Nurfaizah, Syafinas and Camelia, as well as local Nasyid group Rabanni. He has also backed up for international artistes such as Taiwan’s Wang Lee Hom and Indonesia’s Hetty Koes Endang and Kris Dayanti.
IN A FLASH
Leong lived carefree life and God was never on his mind. When he was in college, a friend tried introducing Christ to him but was scolded for intruding into his personal space.
