Study #1: CHET
CHET ( FENCE ) AND CHEN ( GRACE)
CHET is the 8th letter of the Hebrew Alef-Bet.
This letter comes after ZAYIN and is called by the guttural name of CHET ( pronounced Het ). It is usually pictured as a tent wall or fence – which divides the inside from outside, one’s landed property from the neighbours’.
If you study the letter closely it even looks like a fence…from an aerial point of view!
In the Holy Land, fences were made of stone… not wood or metal. It is a picture of God’s ageless grace as God wants to give life to those outside His wall of loving protection, i.e. to those out in the world despite their weaknesses, mistakes and sins.
CHEN is made up of two letters:
1. CHET = Fence, divider, separation.
2. NUN = Seed, life, continuity.
In Genesis 6:7-8 God spared Noah and his family from the Great Flood because Noah ” found GRACE (CHEN) in the eyes of the Lord”.
The action underneath the verb CHANAN is “to give a favour”. Such grace is best described as “a heartfelt response by someone who has something to give to one who has a need”.
Father God, Your Fence ( CHET ) that gives life or protects life is the place where we can find answers for any kind of need. Empower us to be Your under-shepherds to bring in the lost sheep of the world so that they can be protected by the Grace ( CHEN ) of our Good Shepherd who is the Door to a life of Grace ( CHEN ) within Your enveloping arms of CHET.
