Study #7: LAMED

Study #7: LAMED

LAMED: THE PICTORIAL OF AN OX GOAD

This wooden rod must not be mistaken for the gold scepter of a king ( ZAYIN ).

The LAMED was originally a pictograph of a goad, the principal instrument for training and directing oxen in ancient agrarian society.

With this in mind, Jesus’ invitation in Matthew 11:29-30 becomes more understandable: “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me”.

Being yoked together with Jesus means learning from Him just as a young ox learns from a seasoned bull how to walk in one accord.

And when Jesus says His yoke is light, He is saying His goad ( LAMED ) is not cruel. For it generates just enough discomfort to move our hearts to a closer relationship with God and with one’s fellow man.

Heavenly Father, Jesus as our LAMED prods us to hear and obey You. This discipline may hurt but it is the chastisement we need to learn how to be spiritually mature in Christ. May we count it as the light afflictions of discipleship for the greater glory of knowing You for who You truly are.
