LAMED: THE GOAD OF DISCIPLESHIP ( PART 5 )

Yesterday we learnt what a disciple is – “one who follows another’s teaching” ( Vine ) i.e. a learner who imitates his teacher.

The goal in being a disciple is stated by Christ Himself – to be like the teacher ( Luke 6:40 ). To be His disciple then to strive to be like Him. This coincides with God’s goal in the redemption of mankind that they be conformed to the image of His Son (Romans 8:29). Since Jesus is the Son of God, the goal of a disciple is to be more godly.

Heavenly Father, through both precept and example, Jesus taught His disciples how to be conformed to His image. And He invites us to become His disciples ( Matthew 28: 19-20).

Thus Paul advised the young Timothy (1 Timothy 4:7-9)

” But reject profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise yourself towards godliness. For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance”.
