10 Reasons I Thank God that I’m Malaysian

By Ruth Yong Wang Theen

Sometimes, in the middle of everyday life, we forget how much we truly have to be grateful for. As Malaysians, our blessings are countless , both big and small. The Bible reminds us, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18, NIV).

So here’s my list of 10 things I thank God for as a Malaysian. Maybe they’ll remind you of reasons to lift up your own prayer of gratitude too.

1. Our amazing food

From nasi lemak with its spicy sambal to banana leaf rice piled high with curries, and satay dipped in peanut sauce, Malaysia is truly a food paradise. Our meals are more than just about taste. They’re about community. We gather around the table to eat, talk, and laugh. Each dish is a reminder that God has provided abundantly. “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need” (Psalm 23:1, NLT).

Reflection: How can you thank God today for the simple blessings, like the food on your table?

2. The gift of many languages

Our everyday conversations can be a joyful mix of Malay, English, Mandarin, Tamil, and sometimes Manglish all jumbled together. It’s uniquely Malaysian! Every language we speak reflects God’s creativity in forming cultures. The book of Acts reminds us that God’s Spirit reaches people in every tongue (Acts 2:6, NIV). Our multilingual society is not confusion but beauty, a living picture of diversity.

Reflection: Do you use your words to bless and encourage others in their own language?

3. Celebrating every festival

Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, Deepavali, Gawai, Christmas, we have them all. Our festivals remind us that joy can be shared across differences. What a blessing to live in a land where neighbours open their homes and invite us to join in their celebrations. In heaven, John saw “a vast crowd… from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb” (Revelation 7:9, NLT). Our Malaysian festivals give us a small taste of that glorious day.

Reflection: How can you share God’s joy with your neighbours, no matter their background?

4. Peace from major natural disasters

Yes, Malaysia has its share of floods and haze, but compared to many nations, we’ve been spared from constant earthquakes, volcano eruptions, and typhoons. That’s not something to take lightly. It’s God’s mercy. “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble” (Psalm 46:1, NLT). His protective hand covers us daily, often in ways we don’t even see.

Reflection: How often do you pause to thank God for His protection over our land?

5. Racial and religious harmony

It’s not perfect, but Malaysia is still a place where neighbours of different faiths and races live side by side, sharing food, festivals, and sometimes even family ties. This is precious in a world where divisions often turn violent. God’s Word reminds us, “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1, NIV). Our harmony is a fragile but beautiful gift.

Reflection: What can you do to sow peace and understanding in your community?

Even our food reflects our diversity and harmony.

6. Weather that keeps life simple

Yes, the tropical heat makes us sweat, and the sudden rain can flood our shoes. But compared to freezing winters or desert droughts, our weather is kind. God’s cycle of sunshine and rain sustains us. Jesus Himself said, “For He gives His sunlight to both the evil and the good, and He sends rain on the just and the unjust alike” (Matthew 5:45, NLT). Even the weather points us back to God’s faithfulness.

Reflection: Do you see God’s beauty in the ordinary rhythms of nature around you?

7. Everyday kindness

It’s in the small things: the uncle who helps you cross the street, the aunty who tells you to “eat more,” the stranger who smiles at you on the LRT. Malaysians are quirky but kind. God often reveals His heart through ordinary acts of care. “Do to others as you would have them do to you” (Luke 6:31, NIV).

Reflection: In what little ways can you show God’s love to someone today?

8. Affordable travel in our own backyard

Penang’s food streets, Sabah’s majestic mountains, Langkawi’s beaches, Sarawak’s longhouses, all within our reach. You don’t need a huge budget to explore God’s beauty in Malaysia. Each place reflects His creativity and glory. As Psalm 19:1 (NIV) says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”

Reflection: When was the last time you slowed down to admire God’s creation nearby?

9. Durian (yes, even that!)

Durian splits us into two camps: you either love it passionately or can’t stand the smell. But maybe that’s what makes it fun. It sparks laughter, memories, and family debates. God made creation rich in variety, sometimes strange, but always with purpose. “Everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving” (1 Timothy 4:4, NIV).

Reflection: How can you celebrate God’s creativity, even in things you don’t fully enjoy?

10. The spirit of community cooperation

From flood relief efforts to neighbourhood clean-ups, Malaysians still show up for each other. This spirit of helping hand-in-hand reflects the heart of Christ, who calls us to carry one another’s burdens. “Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2, NLT). When we live this out, Malaysia becomes more than a country. It becomes a community.

Reflection: Who might God be calling you to stand alongside today?

Gratitude changes our perspective

Malaysia may not be perfect, but it is a land overflowing with God’s blessings, big and small, funny and profound. Gratitude changes the way you see your country: not just as it is, but as God intended it to be.

So the next time you taste nasi lemak, hear a cheerful “lah,” or stroll through a night market, let your heart whisper a prayer: “Thank You, Lord, for Malaysia.”

Because at the end of the day, the greatest blessing is knowing that God placed you here, for such a time as this.
