History

In 1969, humanity achieved a monumental feat: landing on the moon. Neil Armstrong’s iconic words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” echoed across the globe.

Reflecting on that monumental year, it also marked significant beginnings for Christian believers in Malaysia. Asian Beacon emerged from humble beginnings as an in-house magazine, pioneered by Ben Sawatsky, an American missionary deeply committed to his community at the Evangelical Free Church in Petaling Jaya (now PJEFC).

By 1971, the reins of Asian Beacon had passed to Morrie Palmer, continuing its mission with a simple yet profound impact. Its inaugural issue, supported by the pioneering spirit of its first advertiser, C.K. Tang of Singapore, set the stage for the magazine’s enduring influence in the region.

Two years later, Dr. Chong Kwong Tek and Goldie Chong took on the challenge of leading Asian Beacon as its first Malaysian editors. Their headquarters? A modest space above Dr. Chong’s medical practice in Melaka, where their ambitious work began to unfold.

With a focus on delivering quality coverage of events across the Malaysian Church, sharing powerful testimonies, and featuring the beloved column “Dear Goldie,” where Goldie offered heartfelt advice to readers facing personal challenges, the magazine quickly gained a devoted following.

In 2013, Asian Beacon embarked on a new chapter by launching into the digital realm with an online magazine and revamped website. The past decade has been a journey marked by unwavering faith and dedication. Hundreds of passionate individuals answered the call to contribute to Asian Beacon through writing, editing, administration, printing, distribution, and more.

Dr. Chong and Goldie remain active contributors to Asian Beacon today, offering ongoing prayer, support, and occasional articles. For many believers in Malaysia, Asian Beacon has been a companion of the faith. Our hope and prayer is that we will remain faithful to the call as a beacon of Hope for believers, seekers and communities in Malaysia and Asia.
