Study #1: HEI

Today we move on to the 5th Alphabet: HEI.

This extraordinary letter has so much spiritual meaning.

With its gematria value of 5, it stands for God’s amazing grace.

It is even used twice by God Himself in spelling His essential Name above all names: YHVH.

Today I shall focus on its relation with the preceding letters: GIMEL ( the donor with a giving heart) and DALET ( those hidden behind Door of Need ).

A. Here’s the pictorial cast:

1. GIMEL ( The deliverer or giver of good gifts ).

2. DALET ( The Door behind which lies the poor, needy, marginalised,
disfranchised, widows, orphans, aliens ).

3. HEI ( God’s grace ).

B. THE SCENARIO

If GIMEL gives to the DALET, the glory goes to the GIMEL. But if the GIMEL gives anonymously, the glory goes to the successor HEI ( God ).

There is a famous story of a rabbi ( as GIMEL ) who wanted to bless a poor family of DALETS with a food basket at their front door ( DALET ). When he saw the head of the house walking home in the distance, he jumped over a wall to hide himself and in the process broke his leg ( GIMEL ) rather than take the glory of being identified as the donor – which glory he believed should go to God alone ( as our HEI ).

C. THE PRAYER.

Father God, in our study of HEI in the days ahead, may Your Holy Spirit ( GIMEL ) remind us that the purpose of our giving is never to glorify self ( the fleshly pride and dark side that underlies GIMEL) but that You should be glorified as our HEI. For we are indeed blessed to be a blessing ( GIMEL).
