Study #3: ZAYIN

The Hebrew Language does not have a separate set of numbers like English. So the letters of the Alef-Bet are employed to convey numerical values, e.g. Alef is 1, Beth is 2.

ZAYIN as the seventh letter has a numerical value of 7 which means completion and perfection.

But as a word ( ZYN), its gematria value is 67 – the exact same value of the word BINAH (Understanding ) in the Book of Proverbs.

Proverbs 9:10 reads:

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom ( CHOKMAH ), and the knowledge of the holy is understanding (BINAH)”.

Like Hebrew poetry elsewhere in the Bible, this verse uses PARALLELISM.

Just as Wisdom ( CHOKMAH ) comes from obeying God, so understanding ( BINAH ) comes from the knowledge of the Holy One.

BINAH comes from the word BEYN ( Between ), and implies the ability to distinguish the real from the unreal, the truth from the counterfeit. Understanding thus comes from “rightly dividing the word of truth ” ( 2 Tim.2:15 ), since it is in the Word that we are given the ” knowledge of the Holy One” ( 2 Tim.3:16 ).

Although Wisdom is the principal thing ( Prov. 4:7 ), it works best with Understanding. “We must listen to the wisdom of God with attentive ears, and apply our hearts to Understanding” (Prov.2:2 ). The two are an inseparable pair. For the secret of true happiness comes when we earnestly search for and find this Wisdom for ourselves – which is actually the search for God Himself ( Prov. 2:2-5; 3:13 ).

Father God, may we be found in You through Wisdom paired with Understanding. May ZAYIN crown us with the BINAH of Understanding. May it be the go-between to link Your Wisdom with our works of obedience for Your glory.
