History of Asian Beacon
1969 was the iconic year when man made it to the moon. That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. And somewhere in Malaysia, it was one small step for the Christian community with the birth of Asian Beacon. Started in Petaling Jaya by the late Ben Sawatsky, an American missionary from the Evangelical Free Church (EFC), Asian Beacon was originally an in-house magazine for the EFC.
In 1971, Ben Sawatsky passed on the editorship to Morrie Palmer a fellow missionary.
The first ever issue was very simple, with the painting of an Asian lady in a bamboo hat and shawl as the front cover. The first ever advertiser for the back cover was C.K. Tang – Singapore, who later founded C.K Tang department store in Singapore.
The first ever article of the magazine however had nothing to do with Martyrs. The title was Man in the Moon. Joining in on the hype of one of the greatest events of the 60’s the article talked about the importance of God even in the space age. As an astronaut cannot for a single moment cannot survive outside space, we too cannot meet God without becoming a new person in Christ. What a way indeed to launch the magazine. It may have not been a moon landing, but indeed it was a big step for a small publication that would last till today.
In September 2013, Asian Beacon revealed its digital strategy at an event to launch its e-magazine and revamped website.
The digital platforms of Asian Beacon (website, Facebook, e-magazine) was slowly gaining ground, with an active Facebook page that directs readers to our website which has more than three years’ worth of magazines uploaded, and other web-exclusive content such as devotionals and even books in soft copy. The events section is frequently updated to reflect the current activities and announcements of Malaysian churches.
